Should You Tip Your Movers?

Giving tips is generally a way of life in certain industries. You probably wouldn’t give it a second thought when dining out or when checking out of your hotel room. However, it’s less clear cut about whether or not you should give tips to local movers after they help you relocate.

It’s Not Required

Putting it simply and plainly, you are not obligated to tip, nor should you feel embarrassed or pressured about tipping your movers. However, that is not to say that it’s not appreciated or is it considered offensive if you decide to give your movers a little extra, especially if they went above and beyond with their services.

When Should You Tip?

Everyone has different standards as to what defines a job well done, and ideally, whether or not we tip is dependent on those standards. Some people value time and punctuality, and would usually give tips to movers who show up on time, or finish the process of moving ahead of time. Others tip based on how difficult the task is, like when moving to places that are more difficult to get to, like houses or buildings with winding stairs, narrow corridors and others. Some even tip just because they liked the movers’ general demeanor, professionalism and attitude. There are just guidelines, of course; there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to tipping. Ultimately, it’s all about what you would consider as satisfactory service.

How Much Should You Tip?

The rule of thumb when it comes to tipping is 5-10% of the cost, but, again, this is not a hard and fast rule, and you’re not obligated to give more than what you can. Be sure to hand the tip to the head mover so it can be distributed equally among the crew.

Non-Cash Tips

You can show your appreciation for your movers even without providing tips. A popular way to do so is to put out snacks and beverages. Cold drinks are always great after a move. It may not sound much, but it does show your movers that their work is appreciated.
