The Effects of Clutter

In 2018, Doctors Joseph Ferrari and Catherine Roster of DePaul University of Chicago published a study that examined the effects of clutter on emotional wellbeing. In the process of collecting their data, their team questioned three separate groups of adults: college students, young adults between the ages of twenty and forty, and adults over the age of 50. Their results were quite telling.

Doctor Ferrari defines clutter as an “overabundance of possessions that collectively create chaotic and disorderly living spaces”. Their study found that, regardless of age group, a cluttered home resulted in feelings of frustration, stress and, among the older group of adults, overall life dissatisfaction.
